There are two types of knowledge management.
- BIG KM
- KM regarding patents and rights management and IT databases, or expert systems.
Generally big KM has got a lot of bad press. Knowledge isn't easily controlled by the law or by training or by forcing it into databases.
- Little km
- KM regarding what people know and how they know it.
- KM regarding who you know and trust and share things with. KM is helping people do better.
- KM regarding how diverse the knowledge of the group is and how useful that is in the development of innovation and the capacity to change.
Little KM, sharing and helping each other works well. Our attempts to make the business more efficient, the business systems for quality control and financial control, tend to destroy the values that make little KM possible.
